🏄 Local News You Should Know

Wave Pool Plans in Newport Beach Reversed

Last year, Newport Beach City Council approved plans for the Snug Harbor Surf Park, a proposed wave pool development near the Newport Beach Golf Course. That plan is now in limbo after the council voted to rescind its approval of a general plan amendment that would have allowed a nearly 60,000-square-foot project. A successful petition forced the council to either send the issue to voters or reverse course, and members opted to pull the amendment instead. While a wave pool could still move forward under existing zoning rules, it would need to be significantly smaller, and it remains unclear whether the developer plans to proceed.

Newport Harbor Dredging Reaches Key Milestone

The long-awaited Newport Harbor dredging project continues to make progress, with crews completing much of the Turning Basin and Coast Highway areas and hauling roughly 75% of the dredged material destined for Long Beach. Work is now shifting toward Marina Park and the peninsula, with additional dredging expected to last several months. Once completed in fall 2026, the project will restore harbor depth, improve water quality, and mark the final large-scale dredging effort anticipated for Newport Harbor for decades.

Free Tax Preparation for Irvine Residents

The City of Irvine, in partnership with Orange County United Way, is offering free tax preparation services for eligible residents through OC Free Tax Prep. Irvine residents who earned under $69,000 in 2025 can receive help filing their tax returns starting February 3, with assistance provided by IRS-trained and certified volunteers. The program also helps identify potential state and federal tax credits, including Earned Income and Child Tax Credits, which could put extra money back in residents’ pockets.

🌟 OC Trivia: Did You Know?

Before large-scale dredging projects, much of Newport Harbor hadn’t been restored to its original depth in over 50 years—making the current effort one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the harbor’s history.
